Cherry Ghost, ‘Clear Skies Ever Closer’

With his much-anticipated third album ‘Herd Runners’ due for release next month on Heavenly Recordings, Cherry Ghost has shared the video for the excellent ‘Clear Skies Ever Closer’ and announced a string of UK tour dates in June. Actress Maxine Peake (Shameless, Silk) makes her directorial debut with the video, and stars alongside Shaun Evans (Endeavour).

Colorful Rhythm’s new album ‘MegaPixy’

Colorful Rhythm is a Rock-Pop band out of Chicago, founded by the composer, pianist and producer Judy in 2012. Her newest album ‘MegaPixy’ was released on Nova Sun Records on February 25th.

Judy started out composing instrumental pieces and playing solo piano at museums and local Chicago music venues. She is a classically trained musician whose music influences range from classical, experimental, electronic, freak folk and art rock. Colorful Rhythm’s music has been described by her fans as “Imaginative surreal synergy of instrumental and vocal music, with an enchanting mix of influences”.

The new album ‘MegaPixy’ is a long-distance collaboration with shadowy parties best left unnamed. Jangling guitars, pounding drums, and uncanny electronic howls fuse with Colorful Rhythm’s trademark ethereal vocals and pianistic flourishes in these iridescent crystals of songcraft. Colorful Rhythm and her henchman will show you their outsiders’ view of an alien Midwest, from the kaleidoscopic towers of Chicago to the lunar snow-fields of North Dakota.

Nuborg, ‘Sliding Off the Edge of the World’

Dark and atmospheric with a killer – if subtle – bassline, ‘Sliding Off the Edge of the World’ is the title track from Nuborg’s new album. The single is out this very day, one of series of singles from the album being released on the 15th of each month.

With comparisons to the likes of Kate Bush, the clear, precise female vocal really compliments the foreboding, light instrumentation. A little gem.

Coronation Ball, ‘God Be Careful’

This gloriously slow build track is something of a slow-burn but grows from a sparse beginning into an epic, stadium ready song to enjoy. Only their second single after ‘You Had My Heart’, Coronation Ball have taken a patient approach to their music – making sure it emerges from the studio fully formed for the large audience they feel it deserves.

If this gets your pulse up as much as it does ours, you can catch Coronation Ball performing at the Young and Lost Club Records gig at The Nest in Dalston on the 25th of May.

‘Losers Can Win’ – the debut Starwalker EP

French ambient icon Jean-Benoit Dunckel (Air, Tomorrow’s World) and Icelandic composer Bardi Johannsson (Bang Gang) have released their long-awaited debut EP as collaborative electro-pop duo Starwalker.

Following their separate successes – including Air’s critically acclaimed 1998 debut ‘Moon Safari’ – together the pair make celestial music that is shadowy, poetic and vibrant.

While the EP’s title track features the calming timbre of Israeli singer-songwriter Keren Ann, filled with mellow guitar strums and deep electronic notes, second track ‘Bad Weather’ is more strongly reminiscent of Air’s characteristic chilled style – hushed, ethereal harmonies, spacey sounds and slightly melancholic melodies.

The EP also includes an intricate remix of ‘Bad Weather’ by award-winning Icelandic electro-pop quartet Bloodgroup, whose lo-fi interpretation beautifully complements the duo’s layered sound.

Jack Robert Hardman, ‘Loose Connection’ video – The Great Unknown EP out May 19th

Jack Robert Hardman returns with The Great Unknown EP, released on 19th May via Pleasant Pursuits/Cooking Vinyl Publishing.  The EP’s opening track Loose Connection is available as an instant Free Download with each CD pre-order via Jack’s official website, with digital pre-orders being available via iTunes from 31st March. Loose Connection can also be streamed and shared via Soundcloud and the video via YouTube following its premiere on Clash.

Loose Connection, indicative of The Great Unknown EP as a whole, offers hazy acoustic folk melodies, quirky percussion and Jack’s yearning vocals. The sound recalls artists such as Beach Boys, Grizzly Bear, David Kitt and Sufran Stevens in its presentation of songs intricately layered yet beautifully simplistic. Aptly, the EP was mastered by Alan Douches (Sufjan Stevens and Midlake), recorded in part at the legendary Konk Studios and mixed by Adrian Breakspear (Exit Calm).

The Great Unknown EP follows Jack’s self-released debut album (2012) and the subsequent singles Famous (2012) and Plymouth (2013), all of which picked up impressive word-of-mouth accolades and fans. Simon Raymonde of Bella Union sited Jack as a ‘Breaking Act for 2013’ in his Sunday Times Culture piece. While the singles collectively picked up plays on Radio 1, 6Music, XFM and Amazing Radio.
