‘Something Better’ – fittingly titled new single from Tablefox

Hitting the ground running but treating the listener to a slow build to a big chorus, ‘Something Better’ is a new track from Tablefox – a band from New Zealand. The song is taken from their album ‘Objects’, and is a fine demonstration of why their music is high on the list for may indie music fans at the moment.

‘Chameleon’ single from Des Horsfall and Pete Townshend – out Dec 11th

The new single above is ‘Chameleon’, performed by Des Horsfall and Pete Townshend (The Who). Released on Friday (Dec 11th), the single is taken from Horsfall’s new album ‘The Bastard’s Tin’.

The entire triple album, released next year, pays tribute to Ronnie Lane, former bassist for The Small Faces. Over his career, Lane inspired many other musicians, including cult folkie Horsfall and Townshend who went on to become a household name in his own right.

‘Chameleon’, written as a love letter by Lane’s ex-wife Katy, is a fitting collaborative tribute.

Philip Murray Warson is ‘The Last of the Hunted’ on new EP

A specialist in lilting acoustic folk, Philip Murray Warson is a very exciting songwriter. At only 25 he’s a seasoned performer, and it shows in the maturity of his lyrics and melodies. There’s a scale, between being completely forgettable and going over the top on the cheese in trying to create something catchy. Warson does a great job of walking that line.

His new EP, ‘Last of the Hunted’, is out now on Bandcamp. Arguably more of a double A single, the EP comprises two top quality tracks of beautiful folk. One darker than the other, both lovely and laid back while delivering emotional wallop.

New album: The Lowriders

Streaming now online (above), The Lowriders are an Essex based band whose debut album – self-titled – is extremely exciting. Their music, while containing production techniques which are identifiably modern, draws on rock and indie touches all the way through from the 1960s to the present day, setting them apart with an album which builds into a massive range of eclectic songs.

All drawn together but an earthy vocal which sounds just as gruff in falsetto as it does in bellowing chest voice, the songs sweep from huge choruses in the likes of ‘I Am Soldier’ to lighter moments such as ‘Beg & Steal’. Imagine an album that manages to envelope the power of early U2 with the subtle notes of Simon and Garfunkel and you’re close to getting it right.

The trick is to do that without jarring with the changes of pace. It’s hard to put your finger on how they’ve done it, but in the case of the Lowriders it all just knits together and sounds right somehow. Huge credit is due for that, and the next challenge will be coming up with a potential second album which can outshine this first one.

Hawk, ‘Clock Hands’ – new EP out Feb 23rd

The title track of their new EP, ‘Clock Hands’, out February 23rd, this is a fantastic new track from post-funk-folk four piece Hawk. They defy straightforward pigeonholing thanks to a strong blend of ideas, but you can tell from this track/video alone that this band mean business. You can pre-order the new EP now to see what else they have up their sleeve.

New single from NuBorg – ‘Sliding off the Edge of the World’ out now

The latest single in a project releasing an album track by track on the 15th of each month

Based in Norway, NuBorg is the new project from Norwegian singer-songwriter Gunhild Nyborg. Currently in the process of releasing her debut album track by track on the 15th of each month, the latest track ‘Sliding Off the Edge of the World’ is out now.

Brilliantly produced and dominated by a haunting vocal, the track is built on the dynamic lifts and falls of the verses and choruses, as well as a highly melodic bassline. You can hear it for yourself here:

With a wide ranging approach to songwriting, NuBorg has been compared to a wide range of artists including the likes of Kate Bush, Massive Attack and Portishead. And though her songs might be versatile there are two things that tie them together – her thoughtful lyrics and her strong vocal delivery.

The monthly releases have seen NuBorg work with a host of top writers. February single ‘I Lie A Lot’ was co-written with Christopher Neil (Mike & The Mechanics co-founder), while next month’s track ‘You You’ involved established pop hit writers Martin Sutton (LeAnn Rimes, Backstreet Boys) and Ron Roker (Tina Charles).

Captured at Waterfall Studios in Oslo, the singles/album are produced by experienced muso Odd Harald Jensen, who drums for the band Babel Fish and also co-wrote one of the songs on Ronan Keating’s last album. Jensen is also collaborating on one of the upcoming singles on the NuBorg project – set for release in June or July.

The final single will be released on August 15th, when the album will be available to hear in full for the very first time.

All very impressive work from a single mum who has been fighting a serious illness over the last few years. Having won that battle, NuBorg is now grateful to be alive – Gunhild sums up the hard work best herself:

“I am grateful for being able to make this music real, make it come out of my head and out through the loudspeakers. I have had this sound inside me for the longest time and I have worked on learning music production, songwriting, and vocal techniques in order to be able to make it real.” NuBorg
